The Girl and The Pig @ Central Embassy, Bangkok - เดอะเกิร์ล แอนด์ เดอะพิค @ เซ็นทรัล เอ็มบาสซี กรุงเทพฯ

Cuisine: bistro food / brunch
Price: THB600 per person without alcohol (what we paid for)
Visited: 23 July 2014
Food: 5/10
Atmosphere: 7/10
Value for money: 3/10
Services: 6/10
Scale: [1=poor ---- 5=average/standard ---- 10=outstanding/exceptional]

If you have had a chance to stroll through Central Embassy on Phloen Chit Road, you sure are to notice that there are so many restaurants (mostly on the expensive end) on the fifth floor. The Girl and The Pig is also not an exception. It is on the fifth floor too and is located right next to the famous Chikalicious.

Previously, we had visited The Girl and The Pig one time but it was just a quick one. This time we opted for a simply dinner. The venue is in bistro style and indeed serves bistro style food. Walking into the place, you will spot immediately the dessert bar. The Girl and The Pig claims to use 100% natural ingredients, i.e. no preservative / flavouring / colouring, for all of its desserts which are home-made. The other thing that we spotted is the service. Staffs seem to be rather friendly. There seem to be staffs in every corner literally. Actually, there are so many for a small place like here (cc. 10 tables).

To us, The Girl and The Pig is like a place to hang out with friends, like in many other restaurants in Bangkok nowadays, rather than a destination for culinary. It is kind of relax and comfortable here. Sitting by for some glasses of wine is as well not a bad idea. Wine list here is kept at minimum but rather good range in fact. There may be just around 20 choices of wine in which mostly are red and the rest are sparkling, white, and rose. In addition, some of the price tag has been designed reasonably when comparing with other restaurants for examples Tenuta Sette Ponti Oreno 2009 at the price tag of THB3,300 (cc. THB2,500 for street price) and Champagne Lombard Brut for THB2,200 (cc. THB1,500 for street price). For wine by glass, there is only one choice for sparkling, white, and red daily.

For food, they serve rather non fancy food that can be found in many other bistro / brasserie. It was our pop-by dinner and we decided to go for Pulled Pork Burger (4/10) and Rome-style Carbonara (5/10) before ending the meal with Pear & Chocolate (6/10).

Pulled Pork Burger is basically shredded pork in a kind of sweet and sour bbq sauce and served with lettuce, grilled pepper, and brioche buns. It was not quite impressive for me really. I just don't think the bbq sauce performed well. It overpowered the others. If I return here, I would go back to the basic burger next time. Additionally, there were potato wedges served along side which were just so-so.

As for Rome-style Carbonara, it is the classic classic carbonara. When mentioned Rome-style, The Girl and The Pig means carbonara with no added cream. It is the thing that many restaurants here tend to use cream when making carbonara. However, carbonara was in fact originated around Rome area and consists mainly of egg, cheese, and bacon (do correct me if I were wrong). The dish to us was enjoyable with as expected flavour. Nevertheless, the spaghetti was too soft and a bit too salty on the palate. I would personally reduce salt and put a lot more parmesan (^.^). But milder flavour may suit the liking of BKK people more.

Lastly, Pear & Chocolate was the best so far for the meal. It is a combination of chocolate lava or fondant, poached pear, and vanilla ice-cream. This is not one of the best I have had for sure but still far better than the one of the famous After You (which could be one of the worst chocolate lava in my life). I understand that they try to keep the overall flavour not too sweet so poached pear and vanilla ice-cream were low in sugary taste. But I think that sweeter could balance the picture better as it would cut off the dark taste of fondant. Fondant, on the other hand, was nice in term of both flavour and texture. I like the runny inside that was not overly runny and the dark chocolate flavour part.

Overall, as aforementioned, this is a place to hang around rather than culinary destination for us. Go for basic food to be sure. Just the pricing that is high really: cc. THB1,200 for only 3 simple dishes for two of us which was a bit ridiculous in our opinion. Well, it is Central Embassy and there is nothing cheap in this 6/7 stars shopping center.

The Garage: Burger & Grill @ All Seasons Place, Bangkok

Cuisine: American
Price: THB280 per person without alcohol (what I paid for)
Visited: 27 August 2011
Food: 5/10
Atmosphere: 4/10
Value for money: 3/10
Services: 4/10

Talking about burger, you probably think about McDonald, Burger King, or the Japanese chain Mos Burger. However, on the 2nd floor of All Seasons Place, Bangkok, there is a restaurant called The Garage that offers premium grade burger. This place has been well known to those who work around Witthayu area. Walking into the restaurant you will probably notice straight away that this place serves American style food. Photos and portrait of Hollywood stars along each side of walls, USA car plates, USA flags, and etc. On the pricing side, this can be a lot more expensive when you compare to those of Burger King and McDonald but you surely get what you pay (on the quality of ingredient).

It was burger and it was big, we hence could only try 2 dishes this time T__T. First one was the typical Cheese Burger. Well this came with a piece of beef burger, dense and cheesy, though not so tender. We ordered medium for this one. If it had been medium, this could be much better and juicier (4/10).

Juicy Lucy Burger was probably similar to Cheese Burger. But this one, 4 kinds of cheese were stuffed into mince making more tender and juicier: each bite there would be cheese running out of the burger ^^. We like this one more but the bread was rather hard and coarse (5/10).
