Looking for Hong Kong style wuntunmeen or simply noodle with dumplings in Bangkok, here is one in Thonglor 9, "Gokfayuen". It is just a small shop of a commercial building. The place can accommodate probably around 20 visitors at a time only. Gokfayuen can be really busy during lunch time at weekends. However, it is at least convenient that it opens all day from 11am to midnight. Some tips for visiting here: 1) do not come in a large group and 2) if you do drive, just park anywhere along Thonglor near the restaurant as there are only 1 or 2 lots in front of Gokfayuen.

no fuss atmosphere!!!!

Unfortunately, I did go for noodle at all so I cannot really comment on that. For soup base dishes, we had Jin Wuntun (shrimp dumplings) - เกี๊ยวกุ้งน้ำ (6/10) and Jin Ngou Lam (braised beef) - เนื้อตุ๋น (6/10). Both were decent. Jin Wuntun gave more freshness whilst Jin Ngou Lam was rich in flavour. The braised beef was rather tender. When coming to shrimp dumplings, I personally usually look for complexity of the soup. The one here is nice enough but I expect more than just that. Both dishes should be great with noodle. Next time I will surely order with noodle.

decent in size and delicious in mouth

Jin Ngou Lam (braised beef) - เนื้อตุ๋น (THB139)

Along with the above two soup dishes, we also ordered Jin Cha Siu (bbq pork) - หมูแดง (5/10) which is perhaps one of the most famous Hong Kong dish. So I did not hesitate to go for it. I was good. Again, just good. Tender but not quite there yet. Some part was still tough. Flavour did not explode throughout. Quite expensive for bbq pork. With the pricing of THB139 for approx. 10 pieces or less. Lastly, we had Hong Kong Style Boiled Chicken Rice - ข้าวไก่นุ่ม (6/10). This one was delicious too. Tender and flavourful pieces of chicken paired nicely with the ginger/spring onion sauce. In my opinion, the proportion between rice and chicken was somewhat mismatching. I wouldn't mind paying more with larger portion of chicken. For HK Chilled Milk Tea - ชานมเย็น (5/10), it was just an ordinary milk tea but enjoyable. Plus point is it is not overly sweetened.

Gokfayuen might not be the very top Hong Kong style joint just yet but it is decent enough for Bangkok. As I was strolling out of the restaurant, I saw a post of congee and it looked great. That would be my order during the next visit. By the way, Gokfayuen also do the loyalty card programme thing. Each dish you order, you get 1 stamp. With 9 stamps, you get 1 dish for free during the next visit. Not a bad deal huhhh???

Having heard so much about the excellent burger by food truck "Daniel Thaiger" but I personally have not got a chance to visit just yet. Nevertheless, in case queueing along street side and have you burger right there is not your kind of habit, Game Over Lounge also offers the very same burger "Nerd by Daniel Thaiger".

Game Over Lounge is an electronic playground: i.e. a place where gamers can hang around. Apart from games, the place also operates as a bar where you can grab beer, cafe food, and even burgers by Daniel Thaiger whilst playing along. The way that Game Over Lounge operates is more like self-service. You can order your food and beverage at the counter and pay right there. Cooked food will be brought to your table once done. Basically, there will be no wait staffs and in consequence there will be no added 10% service charge to your bill. If you are familiar with Thonglor, you may know exactly where Liberty Plaza is. Otherwise, Liberty Plaza, where Game Over Lounge is situated, is right at the far end of Thonglor and is right by the bridge crossing Saen Saep canal. If you drive there, Game Over Lounge can be accessed from the car park.

For this first time, I tried Mr. Steve Burger (6/10) which is basically bacon cheese burger. It was nice and just juicy but not exactly great. I felt that the beef patty still lacked of flavour and was overdone. I did ask for medium but turned out to be almost well done. The good part was crispy bacon and the sauce however the rich taste of bacon seemed to overwhelm the cheese bit. Bun was baked by Conkey's Bakery. It was a bit chewy. I personally preferred softer kind of brioche bun.

Grilled Tuna Melt (5/10) and Fries were also ordered to be tasted. Grilled tuna melt was just a classic tuna sandwich really but enjoyable. To me, I could say that it was a disappointment for me. I have heard a lot about Daniel Thaiger's burger. But this turned out to be pretty much standard burger that ones would expect to get. Yes, enjoyable but not memorable. My favourite one in Bangkok would still be Papa's Kitchen though. The pricing here was not high but not cheap in my view. The actual size of dishes here was smaller than I had imagined from seeing the photo really. Anyway, if you have not tried yourself, it may be a good idea to give it a go. For me, queueing for burger at food truck of Daniel Thaiger will not happen perhaps.  By the way, they also do serve Tomahawk steak at Game Over Lounge at the price of THB300 per 100 grams. Again, I have heard it is really good and it takes 4 hours to prepare so it will have to be ordered in advance. Another choice for you to try with a group of friends perhaps.

Hidden in Soi Thonglor 17 which is the soi next to J-Avenue, there is a pretty decent Thai restaurant at reasonable price: Khao Jao. You can rarely find any reasonable priced restaurant these days in Thonglor. But here is another one left. Khao Jao serves variety of Thai food in an easy and comfy atmosphere. In my opinion, it is excellent for weekend family meal or else a casual chitchatting with friends. The only thing you might have to ignore here is the service. Don't expect much about it.

As said pricing here is reasonable. Local beverage range is also great here. Most of them are priced at THB35 a glass which is like the price on streets.

For us, we started with Fried Egg Radish - ไชโปล้ผัดไข่ (4/10), Wings Bean Spicy Salad - ยำถั่วพลู (5/10), Spicy Salted Gourami with Thai Salad - ยำปลาสลิด (4/10). Fried egg radish was ok. There were a little too much of radish comparing to egg. Some may like it but it is just not balance for me. Wings bean spicy salad and spicy salted gourami with Thai salad on the other hand were too soaky though the taste was already ok with balancing flavour and not overwhelming of spiciness.

Wings Bean Spicy Salad - ยำถั่วพลู (THB80)

Spicy Salted Gourami with Thai Salad - ยำปลาสลิด (THB120)

Moving on to more serious dishes, Preserved Egg Fried Basil - ผัดกระเพราไข่เยี่ยวม้า (6/10) and Salt Roasted Chicken with Lemon Grass - ไก่คั่วตะไคร้ (5/10) were ordered. The preserved egg fried basil was nice with lovely aroma of basil and chewy yummy texture of preserved egg. Love it. The salt roasted chicken with lemon grass should be a dish for those who like mild flavour food. I believe foreigners and travellers will enjoy this dish. Lastly, we ended the meal with Grass Jelly in Milk - เฉาก๊วยนมสด (5/10). This is a standard dessert indeed. The jelly texture with distinct touch of grass jelly went fabulously with milk and brown sugar. Refreshing of course.

In brief, Khao Jao deserves a visit when you feel like a comfy meal around Thonglor. No formality and no pressure here. Just enjoy it in the way you like.

Taper Restaurant and Bar @ Thonglor 13, Bangkok - เทเปอร์ เรสตัวรองท์ แอนด์ บาร์ @ ทองหล่อ 13 กรุงเทพฯ

If you have tried creation by Chef Ton at Le Du before, you may want to check out his new place in Thonglor where he partners up with Chef Toon who would mainly be steering the wheel of this place. This new little place is called Taper and it is located in Soi Thonglor 13 and is right next to Little Beast. The concept of of this place is different from Le Du but partly inspired. This joint, Taper, starts serving just before noon and last until late afternoon / early evening only: i.e. brunch and lunch destination. However, they also have those twisted dishes, East meets West, like Le Du. Personally, I find it rather interesting but still needs some further improvement. By the way, don't worry that this place is in Thonglor and it would be tedious to find parking spot, there are parking lots just behind the building.

The very first dish we got to taste was called Tofu (7/10). It is basically soft kind of tofu served with soy carrot puree and soy reduction. There is also crispy rice along side to give the cracking 3rd dimension. To me, it was like Tao Huai - เต้าฮวย which is soft tofu in lightly sweetened ginger water. I gotta say I do like this dish and it is somewhat healthy too (I think).

Tofu (THB220)

Next there came along pasta dishes: Salted Egg Carbonara (6/10) and E-Sarn Olio (4/10). Salted Egg Carbonara is perhaps inspired by stir-fried squid with salted egg dish of Thai food and pasta carbonara of Italian. The concept of this dish does meet my expectation with salted egg to substitute saltiness of parmesan and egg yolk. On the other hand, E-Sarn Olio was beautiful on its own. It was rich and possesses strong flavour. Somewhat hot and spicy in fact. For us, the word olio somehow misinterpreted the expectation of the dish. Olio is supposed to be rather dry. But it was not quite the case for this one. We believe either the name should be changed or make it a little less soaky. Both pasta dishes, in our view, were a little too soaky and soft. It would be more delightful if al dente was presented. Quality control needs to be lifted at this juncture.

E-Sarn Olio (THB290)

Lastly, we got a chance to have our hands on a dessert, even though we were full by the end of pasta dishes. It was Coconut Pancake (6/10) for the case. Ok, I do like this dish. With that creamy and thick coconut caramel syrup, the dish had already by far won my heart personally. With a touch of coconut and almond crumble along with pancake, I think they did pair each other well enough. This is perhaps the twist from grilled banana with coconut caramel that you may find anywhere in Thailand.

In brief, I do like this place and will return in the near future to see how it gets improved. Well, if you are bored with those so many joints in town that serve those egg dishes, sausages, and typical sandwiches for your weekend brunch, you may as well in par with my perception of Taper. Have a try and bon appetit.

Umi Sushi Restaurant @ Piman 49, Sukhumvit 49, Bangkok - ร้านอาหาร อูมิ ซูชิ @ พิมาน 49 ซอยสุขุมวิท 49 กรุงเทพ

Cuisine: Japanese (sushi)
Price: THB2,500 per person without alcohol (what we paid for)
Visited: 8 November 2014
Food: 7/10
Atmosphere: 6/10
Value for money: 4/10
Services: 6/10
Scale: [1=poor ---- 5=average/standard ---- 10=outstanding/exceptional]

Japanese restaurants have been the popular choice for Bangkokian during the last decade and undoubtedly sushi kind of restaurant is one at the top list. New stores have kept opening, especially in 2014, with omakase style of sushi and high end sushi as the new trend. Umi Sushi Restaurant, at Piman 49 Project (the same block of building as Saigon Recipe) in Soi Sukhumvit 49, is no exception one of the kind. Umi has just been launched recently at the beginning of November 2014. As for atmosphere, it has been kept in classic Japanese style of simplicity with mainly wooden furniture in soft tone. Once walking into the restaurant, there you would see a sushi counter which can accommodate around 10 guests comfortably. There are also normal seats inside but we did not have a chance to take a look. It was only during soft launch when we visited and even the menu was not completed. Only course menu was offered.

As for service, staffs are lovely and friendly. Though the service was slow (it took us almost 2 hours for lunch), it was still better than expected for newly launched restaurant. Perhaps sushi chefs need to have assistant in order to perform faster. Chef Poj, who is the head chef and co-owner, is skilful and was an apprentice at Sushi Cyu at All Seasons Place. I was rather impressed with sushi he made. Not entirely matched with those classy ones in Tokyo but enjoyable in the light of Thai sushi chef.

Just one little thing that other co-owners who were at the restaurant during the meal did not pay much attention to customers as ones would expect a newly opened restaurant to do. There were 2 other groups of a few guests, in which I believe to be owners' friends, dined at the same time. At first, they did not recognise my reservation and seemed surprise with our walk-in but one of the staffs did at least. Secondly, they seem to pay much attention with their friends and forgot all about taking care of other customers e.g. asking about how their food were or what could be improved and etc. Anyway, not a big deal but just would like to share impression.

It was only the soft launch period during our visit and as mentioned, there were still only course menu available ranging from THB1,800 for lunch and from THB2,500 for dinner. We were there for lunch and went for THB2,500 sushi course which comprised of 12 sushi (including maki). Just a little tip, some of lunch and dinner courses may look the same but are priced differently for example 12 sushi course would cost THB2,500 for lunch but THB3,500 for dinner. Many would have thought that it is only the different between lunch and dinner pricing scheme only. Well, it is not for Umi. Ingredients also get varied. Simply said the higher priced, i.e. dinner, does come with more expensive ingredients and vice versa. Management decision in such difference of lunch and dinner menu is questionable from the light of my view!!!!!

The mean began with a small appetiser of steamed egg (5/10) which was just on par with most of Japanese restaurants in town. There was a piece of prawn inside and nothing else special. A particular attention that should be made is the preserved ginger. It was made in-house with the style such that the level of sweetness and sourness are lower than usual. Spices' touch of ginger was still abundant. It was cut in thick pieces rather than this slices. Well, it was enjoyable in its own style but judge it for yourself though.

The first piece of sushi was Ika (Squid) - 烏賊 (8/10). It was served with a touch of salt and lime juice. Smooth, tender, and fresh in style. Not chewy nor fishy at all. Madai (Red Seabream) - 真鯛 (6/10) was then followed. Not an entirely wonderful bite. There was a trace of fishy aroma though served with grated yuzu and lime juice.

Before I forget, I better mention about rice. Of course, ingredients, which are mainly seafood, are largely imported from Japan. Rice is no exception. I was told that sushi rice at Umi is a blend of Akitakomachi and Koshihikari if I was not mistaken. Out of many sushi restaurants in Bangkok, this is perhaps one of the few that serves rather nice rice with almost al dente (I would say) kind of texture and sourness from vinegar still presents. Many places would serve rice that is too soft and soaky. Temperature was as well kept warm in rice cooker and only some part would be taken out at a time to be used.

Next were fattier types of fillet. Akami (red fillet of tuna) - 赤身 (8/10), maguro zuke in this case, was marinated before being served and came along with grated yuzu. I like the lovely scent of citrus which cut through the sweet fattiness of tuna. This was a pleasant bite. Chutoro (medium fatty tuna) - 中とろ (7/10) had a nice fragrant of its own. Mild but compliment. However, the cutting proportion of fillet did look a little distorted for this piece. Then Shima Aji (White Trevally) - しま鯵 (6/10) was served. It was delicious but that was it for me. Only the balance between soft and firm texture that played their roles. On the palate, it was kind of bland. This was similar in the case of Aburi Kinmedai (Lightly Grilled Splendid Alfonsino) - 炙り金目鯛 (6/10). The texture and fattiness of kinmedai were wonderful. Nevertheless, the addition of momiji oroshi (condiments made from grated daikon radish and chilli) didn't seem to pair well with aburi kinmedai. Overwhelming, I would say.

Saba () or Mackerel (7/10) happened to be a surprise for me. It was nicely marinated that yielded mild flavour that incorporated with natural tenderness. But still a trace of saltiness and fishiness. Kohada (Gizzard Shad) - こはだ (6/10), on the other hand, was presented with primary taste of sourness from marination. Not my style but can be enjoyable. At this point, I started to notice that it was coming towards the end of the course when Uni (Sea Urchin) - 海胆 (7//10) was served. It was sure a nice piece with the expected sweetness and creaminess. Still, this was not a fantastic one just yet. Ikura (salmon roe) - いくら (6/10) is usually one of my favourite sushi choice. This time at Umi, it was served in a small bowl rather than in gunkan maki style. When asked whether this supposed to be sujiko (salmon roe in sac), Chef Poj honestly agreed without hesitation. Problem was the quality was not quite there and Chef Poj decided to take the sac off and served in this style. Well, it was still nice with the balance between sweetness and saltiness. The grated yuzu on top did also help bringing up the flavour.

At this juncture, Chef Pof mentioned that tamago was not quite ready and he would serve something else instead. Aburi Toro (lightly grilled fatty tuna) - 炙りとろ (7/10) and Anago (Sea Eel) - 穴子 (8/10) were the final two pieces. Aburi toro was nice with the almost immediate melting effect as the key. The burnt aroma was pleasurable. Momiji oroshi did pair with this aburi toro better than the previous piece of kinmedai. Lastly, the anogo was served with the classic sweet tare sauce. Nice and soft texture, it possessed.

Negi-toro Temaki (fatty tuna hand-roll) - ねぎとろ手巻き was then served and followed by a soup that was made with minced toro as the main ingredients. Charcoal ice-cream was then served to end the meal. This was an enjoyable ice-cream with smooth and chewy texture but I could not really tell it was charcoal. Nice to have anyway. But not so sure which brand the ice-cream was though.

Well, Umi is a rather decent high end sushi at the end. Of course, it is very expensive with pricing almost in the same range as those in Japan. Surely there are some other more expensive out there in town. I am personally not a fan of this expensive trend in Bangkok though I do enjoy sushi a lot. But as an experience, I could not avoid experiencing, right?

P.S. Almost forget to mention that toro here would be preserved for 8 days before serving and 5 days for akami, in case you are curious.
