Many times that we go to Hua Hin and just head straight to grab lunch in Hua Hin area, such as Baan Itsara (บ้านอิสระ) or Je Khiao (เจ๊เขียว), or stop by Samut Songkhram Province for Daeng Seafood. During last weekend, we were introduced to this delightful noodle shop called "Phen Prik Phed" which is situated on Phong Suriya Road (between Soi 7 and 9) in Muang District of Phetchaburi Province. This small shop, in the form of street food with simple decor, of 1 block has been selling Noodle with Pork Ball for decades. This place is surely nice and worth to stop by when visiting Hua Hin area.

But one thing to bear in mind is that patient is important when eating here. It can be slow and take quite a while before staff comes to ask for order. Orders are taken 1 table at a time so no need to ask for staff to order, she will just come to ask you when the cook is ready to prepare for your table. In case of takeaway after eating in, this can be long as they will give priority to those eating in first. Hence, just wait and be patient but guarantee that it is nice. ^^

Firstly we did try Egg Noodle with Pork BallThin Rice Noodle with Assorted Pork, and Thin Rice Noodle with Assorted Pork. All of which were great and can even be enjoy everyday. Pork balls were tasteful and tender. Assorted pork came with boiled pork, stew pork, and sweetened pork. Good God....they were just tremendous and delicious. Choices of noodle are personal preference, let us not discuss anything on that. As it is said on its name "Prik Phed" which means spicy chilli, each dish had already been cooked and seasoned to give a touch of hot and spicy. If you cannot take hot and spicy, just ask for it though.

Vermicelli with Assorted Pork - วุ้นเส้นรวม

Thin Rice Noodle with Assorted Pork - เส้นเล็กรวม

To me, I prefer to just have Assorted Pork: i.e. no noodle. This way I could enjoy more of filling. Yummy indeed. Those who like it to come with soup, it also tastes great here. Again with or without soup is personal taste. ^^

Many times since I was young that I went pass this place without noticing its presence. Having a chance last weekend to give it a quick visit: "Warocha: Fish Ball with Noodle & Fresh Spring Roll". This place serves just what it says, like many other street food. This place has been established for more than 30 years. What I like about this place is not just delightful fish ball but the lady owner is also very nice and friendly. This place is pretty easy to find but bear in mind of no parking space. In case of driving, you may want to find somewhere to park in Soi Ekkamai 12.

Attention!!! Close Every Monday

This is of course an ordinary Fish Ball with Noodle but enjoyable and savoury. We did try both with and without noodle and both were pleasant. Fish ball was tender and soft, wanton was also great. They went perfectly well with fried garlic. Some may find THB40 for a bowl of noodle rather expensive but given what you get I think this is rather reasonable. This is surely a traditional and simple dish that can be eaten rather often (7/10).

What I like more was Fresh Spring Roll (personal perception). Nice and soft sheet dough wrapped with fillings, e.g. Chinese sausages and bean sprouts. Loads of filling with thick and a little sweet sauce, this was splendid (7/10).

We say if you are nearby this place, Thonglor or Ekkamai areas, and are not sure what to eat, why don't try out this tiny lovely place for a quick meal.

Talking about stewed beef, dwellers in Bangkok would probably be familiar with Wattana Panich @ Soi Ekkamai. This 2-block commercial building, just next to Soi Ekkamai 18, is indeed a legendary with its operation more than 5 decades. It may look just like an old little place. But once walking into the place, you could probably feel the atmosphere and smell of nice food. The secret of this little old place is perhaps the broth and stock. It may just be a tradition to keep the pot boiling broth 24/7 to make sure things are nice and thick. Just from appearance, they possibly have been boil the broth continuously for years (interesting...). Just to warn that there is not parking space, hence, bet yourself along the road or find somewhere to park in Soi Ekkamai 18.

There are quite a number of choice of refreshment including traditional tea and coffee. Most of them are THB15 per glass or THB25 a bottle.

Refreshment List

Beginning with Assorted Stewed Beef - เกาเหลารวมแห้ง, at the price of THB60 this is surely something incomparable. It may sound a little expensive. But indeed you get what you pay. The portion is not small and each piece of meat is tender and flavoursome. From our perspective, it is  a little too salty due to overuse of dark soy sauce. Otherwise, an undeniable dish (8/10).

On the other hand, Stewed Beef and Beef Ball in Soup - เกาเหลาน้ำชิ้นเปื่อยสด is as good as the Assorted Stewed Beef but with broth. Beef broth is thick and strong. One of the best broth in town (9/10).

Here we come, the legend Stewed Mutton with Chinese Herb in Hotpot - แพะตุ๋นเครื่องยาจีน. Definitely tender and savoury. Again thick broth with loads of Chinese herbs scent such as ginkgo and goji berry or wolfberry. It is always good to have this dish and it does go perfectly well with a bowl of rice (8/10). But be warned if you cannot take the scent or smell of mutton, just go for beef. Though Chinese herbs do their jobs well to eliminate such scent, some still presents. Another thing is THB650 for this medium size hotpot is rather dear.

We did also try other non-stew dish and they were also nice. Stir-fried Rice Noodle with Prawn in Thick Sauce - ก๋วยเตี๋ยวราดหน้ากุ้ง was quite nice and up to standard. But I felt that prawn was a little overcooked (6/10).

Stir-fried Rice Noodle with Prawn in Thick Sauce

Ending the meal with Coconut Milk Ice-cream - ไอติมกะทิ, which was rich and thick. It did also contain bits of jack-fruit. It may be so creamy but really delicious and delightful. Good thing is it was not too sweet and it did use evaporated milk to make if my sense is not wrong ^^ (7/10).

J Yoo: Sticky Rice with Pork @ Soi Chan 16, Bangkok

Street food has never had any less precious in term of taste around Thailand. Indeed, it is less prestige and elegant but not charming I must admit. Within Soi Chan 16 (between Yaek 10 and 12), there is a stall selling Sticky Rice with assorted topping of Pork which has been run by J Yoo (the owner name). She has been selling this tremendous easy and quick food for over 10 years. Sticky rice of J Yoo really guarantees the highest quality of taste as things do run out before 9am everyday. Hence, it is best to order a day before hand. She said it is really often to some a big lot order of more than 50 packs.

On the down side, it may be difficult to find her stall for those who are not familiar with this area. But follow the map above should be just fine. Notice that there is a 7/11 shop just around the corner of Soi Chan 16 Yaek 11, and her stall is just a couple of steps away. You will need to drive here though because there is public transport around here.

Delicious topping choices

Each pack of sticky rice is wrapped with banana leaf and then paper. Both white and black stick rice are soft and tasty. Even storing in fridge over night and reheated, they are still wonderful. For topping, there are about 4-5 choices: shredded pork, Chinese sausage, grilled pork, and sliced dry pork. All of which are surely yummy. Personally, I like black sticky rice with shredded pork most: really soft and some sweetness from shredded pork. This is surely a perfect dish for breakfast.

It is over 60 years that the secret recipe of roasted pork rice has been passed through generations of Si Morakot. This place is undeniable to serve one of the best roasted pork rice in Thailand. This place may operate until 8pm, however, it usually runs out earlier. I, personally, did give it 3 attempts and failed all to have it for dinner. Leaving my last choice to come during lunch time to be sure. This street food looking place is just like others, it is just a non fancy place that serves tremendous taste food. Personally, I would suggest both local and foreigner to give this a try.

For those who have never give this amazing place a visit, it is not difficult at all. Coming into Soi Sukon 1 from Khao Lam Road, it is less than 50 meters on the left hand side. Just bear in mind that there is no parking space, hence, leaving parking along road as the only choice. If you decided to come by public transport, MRT Hua Lamphong station is the stop to get off.

Delightful Moment

The Legend Team

Here comes one of Thailand best roasted pork rice. With THB40 per plate or THB48 with egg, you get a delicious and value for money dish. Rather large plate of generous portion. Roasted pork was also nice and roasted belly pork was crisp. The secret of this splendid taste is the sauce. It was not just sweet like other places. Though it may not be a favourite one for kids but surely for adult (9/10).

Coconut Nectar (Refreshing ^^)

To accompany the roast pork rice, there are also a few choices of soup to be chosen depending on day such as Pork Stomach with Preserved Vegetable Soup. They were all pretty nice, though it tasted of old style dish. They all were refreshing (8/10).

Library Cafe @ Soi Sukhumvit 24, Bangkok

Cuisine: Cafe
Price: THB300 per person (what I paid for)
Visited: 30 June 2011
Food/Drink: 3/10
Atmosphere: 6/10
Value for money: 3/10
Services: 3/10 (almost like self-service)

Having lived in Bangkok for more than half of my life, I have been noticing that there are so many new cafe being opened during the last few years. I could perhaps sincerely say that none of those cafe is really outstanding. They all seems to serve decent drinks and beverages but lack of quality and touching food and bakery to go with. For this time, allow me to talk about a Japanese style cafe called "Library Cafe" which is situated in Soi Sukhumvit 24 (there is also another branch at Rama IX Road).

Walking into the cafe, you would probably feel that this place rather nice and cozy. It is surely a good place to hang out with friends or perhaps spend a slow afternoon with a cup of latte or tea during weekend if you do live around there. Glancing over the menu board, we found that it was rather difficult to eat as things were written in Japanese style: large variety of drink choices. To go with the concept Library Cafe, there is a bookshelf in the middle of this cafe with collection of books of the owner for visitors to read. Just one more point, this place may look attractive in giving it a visit but bear in mind that there is very limited parking space. Otherwise, BTS Phrom Phong is about 5 minutes walk away.

Chill and Friendly Atmosphere

Library, it must be!!!

No Shoes Please for 2nd Floor

This place is also famous for its "Library Waffle" but to us, it tasted just like Khanom Khrok Singapore (ขนมครกสิงคโปร์), nothing more special. It was rather crisp. Personally, we would prefer to have the typical Khanom Khrok Singapore, pricing is too high (3/10).

We did also try 2 choices of drink Merry Apple Tea and Iced Macha Latte. Well, they were nice but too sweet to my taste. Again, nothing spectacular, just a drink that is enjoyable (4/10).

Library Waffle - ไลบรารี่ วาฟเฟิล

Merry Apple Tea - ชาเมอรี่แอปเปิ้ล

Iced Macha latte - ชาเขียวลาเต้เย็น

Since we were here during evening, we decided to just try out some dishes. Let us not going into details but just over all picture. Pricing is again rather high for food at a cafe like this and the portion was tiny. We felt that some dishes were those kind of frozen food that had been prepared using microwave oven (but we could be wrong though). Nevertheless, some dish such as Spicy Potato Fries was rather delightful as a side dish to accompany. Surely, this is a cafe, not a restaurant and we would not expect much about food. Overall, this is still a nice place to have a chit-chat with friends. Try it out if you have a chance to pass by this famous cafe.
