Tsuki Sushi and Suki @ Thonglor 17, Bangkok

Cuisine: Japanese (sushi and suki)
Price: THB1,200 per person without alcohol (what we paid for)
Visited: 31 July 2013
Food: 4/10
Atmosphere: 3/10
Value for money: 3/10
Services: 2/10

It was our second time to have sushi during the week and yet the second disappointment after Jiro Raw Bar and Grill. We were recommended to try out this newly opened sushi bar called "Tsuki Sushi and Suki" which is located in Soi Thonglor (around Soi Thonglor 17 and opposite Mercedes-Benz Thonglor showroom).

The place is just a small block of commercial building. On the ground floor, there are only a few tables with a sushi counter that can accommodate around 6-7 customers. More spaces are on the first floor.

Tsuki Sushi and Suki is another classic example of a restaurant that has not had a good management plan before launching. At the time we visited, the place has been operating just over a month. The service was pretty poor to be honest: staffs were not attentive, orders were taken wrongly, and etc.

The first range to be mentioned about is sashimi. We did have shima-aji sashimi (5/10) and hotate sashimi (4/10). Both were rather fresh but not of the top quality. They kind of missed the natural and sweet aroma of seafood, especially, hotate. At the price of THB800 for hotate, I do expect more than this.

Aji tataki (3/10) could have been better than it was served. It came in the style of Japanese-Thai fusion in which the dish was mixed with chilli. The dish turned out to be pretty spicy and really destroyed its true flavour.

The first mistake of Tuski Sushi and Suki for the night was this order: Rainbow Roll (3/10). We did order some other roll (forgot to jot down the name T.T) but it turned out to be rainbow roll. We then asked for replacement. We then had the surprise that the rainbow roll was just torch-grilled and topped with some sauce and tobiko and returned to us: they did not prepare the dish we had ordered. Oh well, just never mind and let's enjoy the rainbow roll instead.

Coming on to sushi. Aburi engawa (4/10) has always been one of my favourite sushi choice. The quality of aburi engawa at Tsuki for tonight was enjoyable but not impressive. The flesh was soft and did hold well together. In term of taste, it did give pleasure to certain level. However, the quality of rice of the night was not bad comparing to other shops: not overly soaked nor too soft.

To have sushi, I sure did not miss the chance to try fatty type fish. Chu toro sushi (5/10) and hamachi sushi (5/10) were our choices. Again they were fresh and juicy; really happy to have them. However, they just represented standard quality of toro and hamachi. I would not say they were not good but just lack the essential aroma. The last of sushi was Uni (5/10). It was sweet and creamy and yet fresh. But not silky smooth. I enjoyed the bite but could not find it attractive still. Additionally, I wished the seaweed that wrapped uni and rice would be more crisp.

Moving on to suki. Convincingly, suki (6/10) is the better choice for Tsuki: tastier, much cheaper, and value for money in fact. Price tag for ingredients ranges from THB50, for standard choices such as vegetable, pork ball, and mushroom, up to around THB200 for beef range and much more for imported beef. Despite, confusing between beef and pork for staffs (ordered beef but got pork instead), the overall suki experience here was really enjoyable.

One thing to watch out is the lack of parking space. If you do drive, the best you can do is to park at J-Avenue otherwise you need to find parking space along the street. Overall, sushi may not be one of the best in town but suki is rather delightful. We may give it a return sometime later to see if quality of food and services would improve. But to come here in the hope of finding attractive food is not the case perhaps.

Appearance: dark crimson
Aroma: ripe dark berries
Palate: smoky, toasty, and oaky with blackberry and dark cherry flavour. additional dimension of tobacco, espresso, and vanilla spices. soft, round and rich. smooth texture and silky dry tannins. mid-heavy body.

This is an elegant bottle of cabernet sauvignon/merlot base wine, not really the big and bold style. The admirable sides are purity and soft texture. However, I suspect this wine would reveal its potential better with more time in cellar. If you have some, let them sit quietly for a few more years before awaken them up. Otherwise, make sure of long decanting. Enjoy.

Jiro Raw Bar and Grill @ Hotel Manhattan Bangkok, Sukhumvit 15

Cuisine: Japanese (sushi)
Price: THB1900 per person without alcohol (what we paid for)
Visited: 29 July 2013
Food: 2/10
Atmosphere: 4/10
Value for money: 1/10
Services: 2/10

Recently, there have been so many sushi places newly opened in Bangkok including Jiro Raw Bar and Grill at Hotel Manhattan Bangkok. Having seen quite a number of review on internet, we didn't hesitate to give it a try. The restaurant is located on the 1st floor of Hotel Manhattan Bangkok in Soi Sukhumvit 15. So it is pretty easy to come here: driving or even BTS (Nana Station).

Walking into Jiro, you will notice decoration on the wall along the passage with comments from customers. The interior itself is not so particular touchy: simple decor with 10 seats sushi bar in the middle of the floor. Before visiting Jiro Raw Bar and Grill, we did some homework and had heard about its great sushi. However, the first impression (bad one) was the service. Staffs did seem to have knowledge at all as well as lack of proper training perhaps.

First of the meal was Sushi Aburi Set (2/10). I did expect quite a lot from this place. But this 7 pieces set of sushi that costed us THB1,880 was a disappointment. Fillets were not so fresh and lack of natural scent and sweetness. Fortunately, there were aburi set, otherwise this could have been a disaster. The worst was engawa in the small clear glass. The fish was kind of soaky and tasteless. Come on!!!! This is not a franchise Japanese restaurant. Quality please.

We then had Sashimi Set B (1/10). Good God!!!! At the price of THB1,700, I swear any other street food would be much much more enjoyable than this set of sashimi. Nothing were fresh, some even presented strong fishy smell. The nightmare was toro and akami which were still icy like they were just taken out of freezer. On that day the restaurant ran out of hamachi and they replaced with salmon for us without any notice: that was surely a bad service for this supposed to be high end sushi place. Beyond disappointment, I say.

The last was Sparky Roll (3/10). After two disaster in a row, finally we had something edible. Not spectacular but at least this dish filled our stomach.

Well, not sure if we were there on a wrong day or something. We noticed that there were only other 2 tables other than us. Even it was a bad day for sushi, they should have noticed us giving a good ethic for restauranteur. Anyway, we will surely not be returning to this Jiro Raw Bar and Grill any more, unless it is a compulsory mission.
