Ayutthaya is not all about river prawn. When talking about visiting Ayutthaya, the first question that would literally pop up from everyone would be "going there for grilled river prawn?". Since when that Ayutthaya, the old capital city of Thailand, has become river prawn destination.

During early May 2016, we had a brief chance to visit Ayutthaya for a couple of days. After had sought opinion from local friend, we did hesitate at all to stop by Nai Lieak Beef Noodle as our first destination of the trip. Beef noodle seems to be another famous food in Ayutthaya and this local store does it exceptionally well. Nai Lieak is located on Thanon Pa Maphrao; towards the end of the road. Beware of parking space, it can be very difficult to find a parking lot along the road, especially, during public holiday.

If you have a chance to visit Nai Lieak, I would recommend to try both with and without soup. Personally, I would go for stewed noodle for the first one. Then follow with non-noodle braised beef soup. Both are equally delicious. The stewed noodle gives simpler touch in mouth-feel, while soup based one shows more complexity in flavour from the soup. I like the way that notes of spices explode from the soup. The beef has also been wonderfully braised giving tenderness and flavour.

For me, this is a destination that cannot be overlooked. So classic. Yet at a budget too. Love to go back there.

Kuai Chap Mr. Joe @ Chan Road, Bangkok - ก๋วยจั๊บมิสเตอร์โจ @ ถนนจันทน์ กรุงเทพฯ

Kuai Chap is a classic Chinese style noodle soup dish that I have been fallen in love with since I was a young boy. Kuai Chap is simply rice noodle soup with variety of pork organ. In brief, there are 2 types of Kuai Chap in Thailand: one with clear type of broth which yields in fresher result in palate and the other one with thicker type of broth which is packed with flavour. It surely depends on your style and different stores do offer its own style of broth. For Kuai Chap Mr. Joe, it is the former kind of broth.

If you are going to visit Kuai Chap Mr. Joe, forget for those public transports you may be aware of: local bus only otherwise just drive. There is no parking space available at this rather big store of street noodle. So use your luck to find a parking lot along the road. Surely you will find one as this road is not so jam. It is on Thanon Chan and is not far from Thanon Charoen Krung at all. During lunch time, please do expect to see queue but it usually won't take long. Staffs here work pretty much fast and efficient. Bare in mind that this Kuai Chap place only operates to around mid afternoon. So no dinner at this joint.

another corner, this is a rather spacious noodle joint

For us, we did try both Kuai Chap (8/10) with and without soup. The one without soup gave nice flavour of fried garlic. Nice touch of noodle. Ingredients were fresh. For noodle soup, this was definitely more aromatic and refreshing. But personally it won't be so good on a hot hot day. We did also taste crispy pork belly (7/10). Wonderful texture: crisp skin, tender meat, and juicy.

In short, if you are a local, it won't be difficult for you to pay this place a visit. However, for traveller, it can be tedious to reach this Kuai Chap place. Unless you stop by during lunch on your way to Asiatique which is not far from this place. Anyway, it is good and is worth a visit.

Hia Wan Khao Tom Pla @ Chan Road, Bangkok - เฮียหวาน ข้าวต้มปลา @ ถนนจันทน์ สะพาน 2 กรุงเทพฯ

Cuisine: Street Food / Soft-boiled Rice / Chinese
Charged Price: THB200 per person without alcohol
Visited: 4 August 2015

Value for money: 9/10

When I first heard about a new khao tom pla (soft-boiled rice with fish or fish gruel) near my place, I was so eager that I headed there to try on the next day. Since I was a little kid, I have been a fan of khao tom pla. Usually I have to take myself all the way to Yaowarat (Bangkok China Town) where the old Siang Ki is located. Indeed Siang Ki has been offering excellent khao tom pla since parent generation. However, the construction work of underground train around Yaowarat has caused chaotic traffic all day all night in the area. But now I have discovered a new place near home: Hia Wan Khao Tom Pla.

If you are familiar with Rama 3 Road area, it wouldn't be difficult at all to get to Hia Wan Khao Tom Pla. It is located right on the main street of Chan Road (the local call the area Saphan 2). If you are coming from Sathon Road, drive into Charoen Rat Road and when you meet Chan Road you turn left. Hia Wan Khao Tom Pla will be within 50 metres on your left. Just find an appropriate parking space along the street if you do drive.

Hia Wan Khao Tom Pla is right on the main street of Chan Road

store front

The good thing about Hia Wan Khao Tom Pla is it operates its business everyday. The only few times you will find this place closes are probably Chinese New Year, Thai New Year, and Vegetarian Festival in October. You can always check if you are going to visit during that period. The con is it opens from 5pm to 11:30pm only: i.e. dinner only. Also you better come by early if you want to eat something like fish maw. It will sure run out fast. When I say early, I mean something like before 06:30pm. Really early definitely.

The menu here is pretty much similar to other khao tom pla places. You get to choose ranges of seafood: grouper, pomfret, sea bass, prawn, oyster, and squid. With soup or without soup is up to you. If you are low-carbohydrate people, just ask for no rice. In case of bored with traditional khao tom pla, tom yum or spicy and sour mix are interesting choices here too. To me, the fascinating here is the size of seafood and its freshness. Things are really fresh and they do some in large size, especially, prawn.

pot of ba teng

Personally, I prefer to go without rice and with an addition of ba teng. Ba Teng is a kind of sweet and salty pork. Adding it to the soup does bring up the flavour of the soup considerably. It is not the very best here but delicious enough to bring me the finale part. For spicy and sour mix, this is rich on the palate and can be spicy for foreigners. Do not hesitate to ask for mild flavour if you need.

In brief, this is a highly recommended place for khao tom pla in Rama 3 Road area. The pricing, the overall taste, and the size of portion are in valuable range. Not the top top notch one but enjoyable at certain degree. I personally will return to this place from time to time for sure.

Mee Ton Poe: Phuket Original Hokkian Noodle @ Clock Tower Roundabout, Phuket - หมี่ต้นโพธิ์ @ วงเวียนนาฬิกา จังหวัดภูเก็ต

Cuisine: Thai (Southern) / Chinese (Hokkian)
Price: ~ THB120 per person without alcohol (what we paid for)
Visited: 21 December 2013
Food: 8/10
Atmosphere: 5/10
Value for money: 9/10
Services: n.m. (kind of street food)
Scale: [ 1=poor ----- 5=average/standard ----- 10=outstanding/exceptional ]

Here is one very good and famous food corner on the island of Phuket: "Mee Ton Poe". Hokkian noodle is sure a famous dish of Phuket but none is perhaps more famous than Mee Ton Poe at Clock Tower Roundabout. After the meal, I admittedly think that was a good meal. The place is quite big and you sure cannot miss the big sign of Mee Ton Poe. As long as you get tracked correctly to Clock Tower, you would notice the shop easily. For me, Mee Ton Poe is definitely a place to revisit again and again.

recommended menu

There are various choices available and for myself, I chose to have mee pad Hokkian (pork and seafood) with egg - หมี่ผัดฮกเกี้ยนใส่ไข่ (8/10). It was simply delicious. The bowl consisted of egg noodle, pork, seafood, some green, fry egg and served with a touch of soup just to give the pleasant flavour. It tasted rather balance, not so rich nor mild. I guess this would be something that both Thai and foreigners would find enjoyable. During the meal, we did also order fried curry-pasted fish ball - ทอดมันปลา (6/10) to eat as a side dish. It was nice but not wonderful. There are better ones in other places. By the way, fish ball in Phuket tastes a little different from other provinces in Thailand due to the unique curry paste.

Hor mok or steamed curry-pasted fish - ห่อหมก (9/10) at Mee Ton Poe is a recommendation for must order. It came in a bite size wrapped with banana leave. I love the soft texture with rich and flavourful taste of curry paste and spice. It is sure of the top hor mok you can find.

Lastly, it was my favourite choice of Mee Ton Poe: pork satay and intestine satay - หมูสะเต๊ะกับไส้ย่าง (8/10). Pork satay was delicious but not spectacular. On the other hand, intestine satay was sure one of the best in town. It was grilled perfectly to give juiciness and tenderness. The natural unpleasant scent of intestine was fully diminished with satay curry paste. I just love this bbq intestine satay. If you do not mind much about organ, this is a must order.

Meng Charoen: Hainanese Chicken Rice @ Sathupradit Road, Bangkok

Cuisine: Chinese (Hainanese Chicken Rice)
Price: THB40 per person (what I paid for)
Visited: 21 August 2011
Food: 7/10
Atmosphere: n.m. (street food)
Value for money: 10/10
Services: n.m. (street food)

This time we, Deadly and Chubby, bring you to one of the best local place that serves great Hainanese Chicken Rice (ข้าวมันไก่). This kind of street food place is called "Meng Charoen" and is located between Soi Sathupradit 53 and 55. Unfortunately for those who can only come during evening as this place opens until afternoon when they usually finish off their chicken. Even order for take away, it still tastes fabulous. If you are thinking of ordering for many people, say for than 4, it may be a good choice to order rice and chicken separately. This way you can enjoy more of tender and flavoured chicken.

Meng Charoen @ Sathupradit Road

Hainanese Chicken Rice here is flavoursome and splendid. Rice was just perfectly cooked such that you can separate grain by grain and it was cooked from good quality rice (not the unbroken one). Chicken was really tender and juicy. When eating with chilli sauce, it was just wonderful. Gourd soup was also nice, though some may find this unpleasant due to hint of preserved lime (มะนาวดอง). We may give this (7/10) as it is just Hainanese Chicken Rice and there is surely nothing creative. If I have to score this among chicken rice, this would surely get 9-10 out of 10. By the way, when ordering you can just ask your preferred part of chicken such as drum stick, breast, or thigh.

Just in front of this place, Grilled Pork Ball is also offered to those who visit Meng Charoen. It surely was not bad at all. A good one to eat along with chicken rice for personal joy (5/10).

Tai Seng (small shop of Lang Suan Shark Fin) @ Lang Suan, Bangkok

Cuisine: Chinese
Price: THB100 per person (what I paid for)
Visited: 18 August 2011
Food: 7/10

This little place of Lang Suan Shark Fin (Tai Seng) serves just fast and delicious food just with street food at low price, I must say. Think about THB40 for a plate of Stewed Chicken with Rice, Dim Sum for THB40 per set or Fried Hofan for THB40, where else can you find delicious at this price. At lunch time, this place will be really crowded with office people who work around the area of Chidlom and Lang Suan. What's good about this place is it has English menu, so foreigner and traveller will have no problem ordering food here, unlike many other street food. The location of this place is also pretty easy to find, walking down Lang Suan from BTS Chidlom station, it is on the left hand side within 500 metres range.

Stewed Chicken with Rice has been my favourite lunch time dish. It has rich flavour of soy sauce base. Thick and a little creamy. Addition of mushroom does give the taste even better. Some people may find this a little salty to their taste though. But I love it (8/10).

Stewed Chicken with Rice - ข้าวหน้าไก่มาลายู

Pork Congee with Preserved Egg is also another of good thing here. Nice, soft, and smooth savoury congee like those in Hong Kong. The highlight is the pork that is really tender and large preserved egg. Good thing is they are not being stingy about ingredients at all, even at this low price (8/10).

Pork Congee with Preserved Egg - โจ๊กหมูฮ่องกงใส่ไข่เยี่ยวม้า

Fresh Spring Roll is also a wow here. Loads and loads of filling that are wrapped with thin dough. What special is this fresh spring roll has no sauce but filling has already been cooked to give the right flavour. A must try one (7/10).

Fresh Spring Roll - เปาะเปี๊ยะสด

There are some selection of dim sum from the main restaurant for customers to enjoy. We did try 2 choices this time and they both are great. Steamed Prawn Stuff with Noodle was awesome. Just prawn and prawn wrapped with noodle in soy sauce: a little sweet and salty (6/10). The other one was Steamed Prawn with Duck Web. Duck web was cooked until tender and could be easily eaten. Again loads of prawn (6/10). Both of these were just THB40 each ^^.
