Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru en Champans 2011

Date of Tasting: 16 October 2015
Wine Type: Red
Grape Varieties: 100% Pinot Noir
Alcohol: 12.5%
Origin: Burgundy, France
Appellation: Volnay 1er Cru Controlee
Expect to Pay: ~ EUR90
Web: http://www.demontille.com/
Chubby Appreciation: 93/100
Critics' Opinion: ST - 91/100, BH - 92/100

Appearance: Light ruby.
Aroma: Perfume of flower field enhanced with red fruits. Minerality.
Palate: Medium touch on the palate. Silkily smooth. Strawberry stands out. Complex with persistent finish.

Looking for masculine new world, you might just forget this one. This is pure and cool in style. Classic and elegant. Personally, love this style. Structure wise, it should live its age well in my humble opinion. Enjoyable now but cannot imagine how it would develop during the next decade.

Champagne Jacquesson Dizy Terres Rouges Extra Brut 2008

Date of Tasting: 16 September 2015
Wine Type: Sparkling Rose
Grape Varieties: 71% Pinot Meunier, 29% Pinot Noir
Alcohol: 12%
Origin: Dizy, France
Appellation: Champagne
Expect to Pay: ~ EUR90
Web: http://www.champagnejacquesson.com/
Chubby Appreciation: 91/100
Critics' Opinion: AG - 93/100, WE - 90/100, CT - 90/100

Appearance: Dark rose pink.
Aroma: Exotic dried rose. Red currant. Spices.
Palate: Certainly dry. Concentrate with rich ripe red fruits. Bright acidity. Fine effervescence.

Very unusual rose Champagne. Very dry, yes, it is Extra Brut. I would say it was big on the structure rather than aromatic lingering rose. Would I say it was nice? Yes, it was enjoyable. But I did not find this one so appealing nor sexy. At least it was a good experience. Enjoy it now. Perhaps you may need food to go with this Champagne.

Champagne Bollinger La Grand Annee 2004

Date of Tasting: 24 July 2015
Wine Type: Sparkling White
Grape Varieties: Pinot Noir 70%, Chardonnay 30%
Alcohol: 12%
Origin: Ay, France
Appellation: Champagne
Expect to Pay: ~ EUR70
Web: http://www.champagne-bollinger.com/
Chubby Appreciation: 93/100
Critics' Opinion: WA - 93/100, AG - 95/100, WS - 94/100, WE - 96/100, ST - 94/100, JR - 18.5/20, CT - 93/100

Appearance: Yellow straw.
Aroma: Toasty nose. Yeasty too. Fruity as well.
Palate: Nice cut of acidity and honey citrus. Orange peel. Hazelnut. Fine mousse. Powerful but yet it was refreshing. Minerally and elegant.

Fine bottle of Champagne to be savoured now. However, there are all means to support development over the decade. It is the matter of strong gut in keeping your hands off to see how it matures in the near future. Had it along with Chinese food and they played along with each other nicely though, especially those not so strong dishes like fish maw soup. If having as aperitif, remind yourself to keep hands off before you don't get a chance to drink other wine.

Domaine de la Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos des 60 Ouvrees 2011

Date of Tasting: 18 June 2015
Wine Type: Red
Grape Varieties: 100% Pinot Noir
Alcohol: 13%
Origin: Burgundy, France
Appellation: Volnay 1er Cru AOC
Expect to Pay: ~ EUR70
Web: http://www.lapoussedor.fr/
Chubby Appreciation: 92/100
Critics' Opinion: ST - 92/100, BH - 93/100, JR - 16.5/20, CT - 92/100

Appearance: Dark and red.
Aroma: Seem complex but reduced at the moment. Dark fruits, spices, oak, and field of Provence.
Palate: Rather rich and structured. Fine and silky. Leaded by cassis and black fruits flavour. Minerality in the background. Quite long haul on the finish.

It was mid 2015 and this bottle of Volnay seemed to be closed and mute still. Dark fruit and subtle, yes. But its potential character and finesse are still sleeping. Structure and acidity were there though to support development. To savour its lingering pleasure, patience is required. Forget it for another 5 years, I guess.

Dry River Pinot Noir Martinborough 2008

Date of Tasting: 17 August 2015
Wine Type: Red
Grape Varieties: 100% Pinot Noir
Alcohol: 12.5%
Origin: Martinborough, New Zealand
Appellation: Martinborough
Expect to Pay: ~ EUR70
Web: http://dryriver.co.nz/
Chubby Appreciation: 93/100
Critics' Opinion: WA - 91/100, WE - 91/100, JR - 17.5/20, CT - 90/100

Appearance: Ruby in colour with hint of purple.
Aroma: Sweet red fruits and cherry mainly with forest floor on the background. Mild spices.
Palate: Exhibit layers of sweet fruits primarily: cherry, raspberry, and plum. Fresh and crisp. Medium-full on the structure. Fine tannins. Hint of vanilla and oak.

Not quite the same in character as in other New Zealand pinot noir. Its fruit character stands out pretty nicely. But its sexiness comes when more dimension started showing out: spices, vanilla, flowers, earth, and etc. It is not quite old world in style nor masculine new world. Elegant and velvety are sure ones. Though it is not my style but I cannot disagree it is an enjoyable one.

Domaine Jean Tardy et Fils Vosne-Romanee Vigneux 2012

Date of Tasting: 9 June 2015
Wine Type: Red
Grape Varieties: 100% Pinot Noir
Alcohol: 13%
Origin: Burgundy, France
Appellation: Vosne-Romanee AOC
Expect to Pay: ~ EUR60
Web: http://domainejeantardy.canalblog.com/
Chubby Appreciation: 89/100
Critics' Opinion: WA - 93/100, JR - 16/20, BH - 91/100, CT - 89/100

Appearance: Bright ruby.
Aroma: Mild floral aroma. A bit of cherry and spices.
Palate: Medium-bodied structure. Fine and smooth on the touch. Ripe pinot fruits. A bit of oak.

Good village Vosne-Romanee but rather pricey. Both bouquet and palate taste do not seem to reveal its potential much at the moment. Perhaps a couple of years more of sleeping shall awake its form up. Expect to see more of complexity, minerality, and aroma from this one.

Walter Hansel Pinot Noir Cuvee Alyce 2012

Date of Tasting: 9 March 2015
Wine Type: Red
Grape Varieties: 100% Pinot Noir
Alcohol: 14.2%
Origin: California, USA
Appellation: Russian River Valley
Expect to Pay: ~ EUR45
Web: http://www.walterhanselwinery.com/
Chubby Appreciation: 92/100
Professional Rating: WA - 97/100, AG - 93/100, ST - 92/100, CT - 92/100

Appearance: Dark red
Aroma: Ripe black cherry. Spices with mild forest floor.
Palate: Full on the body. Outgoing characters with fruit forward. Cherry and raspberry notes with vanilla tone on the palate.

Beautiful wine at decent price that can be nicely consumed at its young state and should live well to 2020. Not the kind of overly jammy / oaky as in typical Californian pinot noir but hybrid of European characters. I, personally, even enjoy it alone but it should be great with red meat dishes. Cheers!!!!

Domaine Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets 2005

Date of Tasting: 19 March 2015
Wine Type: Red
Grape Varieties: 100% Pinot
Alcohol: 13%
Origin: Burgundy, France
Appellation: Volnay 1er Cru AOC
Expect to Pay: ~ EUR90
Web: http://www.nicolas-rossignol.com/
Chubby Appreciation: 91/100
Professional Rating: WA - 92/100, BH - 91/100, CT - 92/100

Appearance: Dark red
Aroma: Blue and red berries on the nose with earthiness
Palate: Rather full and concentrate with tannins. Meaty and sweety red fruits. Acid and mineral elements seemed to be diminished.

Not my kind of volnay just yet, this bottle was. However, I feel like it is not quite at its potential level just yet. Things are shut and muted at the moment: it was broad and confusing. Revisiting in a few years should be interesting to see how it reveals. Good night for now for this volnay by Nicolas Rossignol.

Palate: Nutty flavour. Fine and creamy mousse. Layers of citrus fruits, grapefruit, and pinot fruits with vibrant acidity. Rich minerality. Persistent finish.

Based on August 2014 disgorgement, it is a non-vintage champagne of opulent personality combining power with unique elegance. Needless to say much. It's a champagne with sleekness and personality that ones shall deserve on a special occasion and festive season. But why wait for such event if you feel like one now. Salute!!!

Schloss Vaux Cuvee Vaux Brut 2011

Date of Tasting: 28 December 2014
Wine Type: Sparkling White
Grape Varieties: Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Riesling
Alcohol: 12%
Origin: Rheingau, Germany

Appearance: Light yellow

This bottle of sparkling wine fro Germany is a no joke production. A pretty nice and delicious at good value aperitif with the marriage between, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Riesling. Harmonious but yet hidden with power. It should be a brilliant entertainer for a few years. Grab some oysters to savour or a chillax weekend as aperitif will also do. Cheers!!!!!

Walter Hansel The North Slope Vineyard Pinot Noir 2012

Date of Tasting: 30 December 2014
Wine Type: Red
Grape Varieties: 100% Pinot Noir
Alcohol: 14.2%
Origin: California, USA
Appellation: Russian River Valley
Expect to Pay: ~ EUR35
Web: http://www.walterhanselwinery.com/
Chubby Appreciation: 92/100
Professional Rating: WA - 94/100, AG - 92/100, ST - 92/100

Appearance: Ruby red
Aroma: Sweet red berries and spices
Palate: Rather rich medium-full bodied pinot. More fruit forward. Dark cherry flavour with fine acidity. Some spicy notes. Gentle and smooth tannins. Balance on the overall.

Nicely approachable Californian Pinot Noir. I had this with shabu shabu and sukiyaki. Food and wine supported each other well. Fruity palate but not too heavily weighted: more of feminine than masculine. To me, this is like a half-blood style of Pinot Noir: i.e. half Burgundian, half New World. Would not mind at all to follow this producer in the future.

La Brasserie du Bon Bec @ Cogne, Valle d'Aosta, Italy

Cuisine: Italian (Aosta)
Price: EUR20 per person (what we paid for)
Visited: 7 October 2014
Food: 7/10
Atmosphere: 6/10
Value for money: 8/10
Services: 7/10
Scale: [1=poor ---- 5=average/standard ---- 10=outstanding/exceptional]

It was during Autumn when we visited the village of Cogne in Valle d'Aosta. With no surprise, there was hardly any restaurant operated during the period. Just to mention that the high seasons for this area are Summer, when visitors enjoy warmer climate and nature, and Winter, when ski enthusiasts parade in. Nevertheless, we were fortunate enough to get recommended, by the owner of a small hotel where we were staying, a nice, cosy, and so much of our like brasserie that still in operation: La Brasserie du Bon Bec. The restaurant is a part of a famous hotel in the area, Hotel Bellevue. La Brasserie du Bon Bec is situated right in the middle of the town so you won't be missing surely. The dining hall is set to fame the Alpine traditional mountain setting. Staffs were friendly and worked efficiently. There were only a few of them working in a restaurant with around 15 tables. Honestly, food was nice and staffs were equally nice. We decided to stick with this place for dinner during our few days of passing by.

just another cosy corner

Let's mention a bit on the food. They are pretty much local cuisine. No those fancy things at all. But they were yummy. By the way, breads and rolls here were simply delicious. Pricing of each dish was as well attractive: no those ridiculous mark up even in such mountainous place.

Cheese Fondue, Honey, and Walnuts (8/10) and Cream of Potatoes with Fresh Aromatic Herbs and Sausage (7/10) are highly recommended for any cold day (most of the days here anyway). These warm soups were such a good kicking start for a meal. They were creamy and savoury. The cheese fondue, in particular, was splendid with well balance between sweetness of honey and cheesy notes. Walnuts also provided cracking texture to the overall picture.

Next was Polenta with Cheese and Melted Butter (7/10). I promise I really love cheese and this classic polenta with cheese was so yummy and classic: so warm, so smooth, and so cheesy. Another polenta dish was Stewed Beef with Polenta (7/10). Classic stew that was not too thick with creamy polenta was so enjoyable. Lastly, it was Lillaz Trout Baked in a Foil (8/10). So simple but yet so much of satisfaction and joy. Juicy and sweet. Just nice. Lillaz is another little town in Valle d'Aosta and just a few kilometres from Cogne. So you sure guarantee the very best of local catch here.

During the visits, I did also get the chance to try local wines. I opted for pinot noir which I fond of. L'Atoueyo Pinot Noir 2013 (87/100) and Maison Anselmet Pinot Noir Eleve en Fut de Chene 2011 (89/100) were the choices. Both were enjoyable with pinot fruit aroma. But Maison Anselmet possesses more structure and mild oak palate.

Anyway, though we only tried a restaurant in Cogne, we could really say that we do like La Brasserie du Bon Bec and it is a place to go for in Cogne: reasonable price, delicious, and nice people. It won't disappoint you, I promise.

Appearance: bright ruby
Aroma: perfume of rose, menthol, red fruits, and spices
Palate: Subtle and silkily smooth with medium body. Savoury raspberry notes with spices and lively acidity. Fresh, dry, rich and elegant.

Cool climate style of pinot noir with vibrant and elegant style rather that the usual sweet and dense US pinot noir. The soft and smooth touch are the plus points on the palate whilst the highly perfumed nose is as well wonderful. It is made to be accessible young so consume during the next 5 years. I shall indeed enjoy more of this. Cheers!!!!!

Appearance: deep ruby
Aroma: red berries and herbs
Palate: full bodied with density and power. lingering red fruits palate. long and fine silkily tannins.

This is more like a bigger style of pinot noir from Morey Saint Denis. It is big but refined and seamless. The red berries note dominate throughout with support from fresh spices. Impressively long on the finish. Still rather young at the moment so let this baby sleeps until the end of this decade. Cheers!!!!!

Palate: medium bodied with fine volume of juicy red berries and blue berries forward. fruit seems to dominate rather than oak. lively with charming complexity. well balance.

Beauty and elegant in style. It possesses some heavy body but not really overwhelming. Arnoux-Lachaux Les Chaumes 2007 is drinking wonderfully now but yet the life span is still bright ahead. I like the purity and balance of this bottle which perhaps represents the charm of this terroir without forcefully driven. Shall indeed enjoy more of this.

An Italian champagne and yes it is Italian with Methode Champenoise. It was seductive, smooth, energetic but yet elegant. A fruity style that is enjoyable at any moment. The lot was L0234-14023000208 which may survive well for a said period of 5 years. Looking to grab more for my cellar.

Pascal Marchand-Tawse Fixin 1er Cru Clos du Chapitre 2011

Date of Tasting: 8 August 2014
Wine Type: Red
Grape Varieties: 100% Pinot Noir
Alcohol: 13%
Origin: Bourgogne, France
Appellation: D'Origine Controlee
Expect to Pay: ~ THB2,000
Web: http://www.marchand-tawse.com/
Chubby Score: 92/100
Value for money: 7/10
Professional Rating: n.a.

Appearance: deep ruby
Aroma: floral and red currants infusion, some earth
Palate: medium bodied with opulent punch. some sweet red fruits and plum. sharp long finish. flavour development stemming along the course. a little low on acidity. a bit of pungent aftertaste.

It is a rather modern Burgundy for me. There are volume and mild sweetness like those pinot noir from California. I might as well say it is a half-blood. Nevertheless, there was so much joy from this bottle. After an hour from opening, it was blossoming splendidly. Rather value for money from my opinion and is the one to watch for development.

Philippe Pacalet Nuits Saint Georges 2009

Date of Tasting: 9 August 2014
Wine Type: Red
Grape Varieties: 100% Pinot Noir
Alcohol: 13%
Origin: Bourgogne, France
Appellation: Nuits-Saint-Georges Controlee
Expect to Pay: ~ THB3,000
Web: http://www.philippe-pacalet.com/
Chubby Score: 91/100
Value for money: 4/10
Professional Rating: AG - 89/100, BH - 90/100, CT - 90/100

Appearance: ruby in colour
Aroma: red fruit aroma like strawberry with detectable mild flowers floor of which rose petals standout, some cinnamon and smoky cigar on the background
Palate: somewhat creamy with chewy but silky tannins in medium body style. a little perky acidity. pureness of ripe strawberry and minerality.

It needs time indeed. Let this baby sleeps a few more years before experiencing it, otherwise give it a couple of hours with air. The nose is pretty nice but difference from the highly aromatic Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru La Perrieres 2009 which shows super nose but light body. If a more masculine type of pinot noir is your style, you may give this one a try. Do give it enough time to breath though.
