The Capital by Water Library @ Empire Tower, Bangkok - เดอะ แคปปิตอล บาย วอเตอร์ ไลบรารี่ @ อาคารเอ็มไพร์ทาวเวอร์ กรุงเทพฯ

Cuisine: Steakhouse / Seafood / Burger / Grill Bar
Price: THB2,700 per person (what we paid for)
Visited: 28 March 2015
Food: 8/10

Value for money: 7/10
Services: 8/10

In general, restaurants associated with Water Library do guarantee consumers at some degree of appreciation for example Water Library @ Chamchuri Square in the form of fine dining and 1881 by Water Library @ Central World in the concept of hanging out bar. Here "The Capital by Water Library", which is located on the 2nd floor of Empire Tower, comes in the concept of urban steakhouse and grill bar. Inside, the ambient is cool and chic resembling the old time New York financial theme with strikingly elegant and opulent decoration. It was my first time here at The Capital and I felt from the first moment that this was going to be a nice meal. And yes, from the service to food, we were totally satisfied. I have to say that the service here is good, and could even beat the service Water Library @ Chamchuri Square where I had felt the let down in service quality during my last visit.

Here, if you are crazy about steak, you can find quite a variety of beef: from German Simmental to Piedmontese to Japanese Kamichiku and grass fed vs. grain fed. Steak lover will sure be excited. What I really like about this place apart from great food and lovely service is the location. Location, Location, and Location is always and still all time classic important factor. Being situated in Empire Tower which is on Sathon Road means that it is right adjacent to BTS Chong Nonsri Station. It is, hence, super convenient to come by via public transport. Though driving here for dinner during weekdays can be a bit of disaster on an unfortunate day due to office staffs storming out heading home, it is at least away from night time/weekend hanging districts like Siam Square, Thonglor, or Sukhumvit Road in which traffic is definitely less crowded during weekend.

For me, one of the very first thing to arrive on the table, being bread and butter, happens to be one of my all time favourite. Bread here, at The Capital, did not disappoint me at all. The soft kind of bread came along with yuzu and cranberry butter: mild flavour and aroma with delicacy. Additionally, I, without fail, did swipe through the moderate list of wine in which I found reasonably selected. The list is not extensive but modest and comprehensive. It ranges selection from both old world and new world: sparkling wine, Champagne, white wine, red wine, and dessert wine. Wines are categorised by variety of grapes and then sub-categorised by new or old world. Pricing wise, I would say the mark up is moderate. Not exactly value for money nor ridiculously expensive. For the night, I had Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe 2004 (93pts). The tannic and complexity of this Barolo crafted by Cavallotto did pair wonderfully with tenderloin. I have to say I do like this one a lot and ones should not miss it if you happen to face one.

When it came to the actual food, the first to arrive on the table was Wagyu Bolognese (9/10). This was so so so classically delicious. There is perhaps no need for necessity of Kamichiku wagyu at all. Any decent beef would be so delicious with this recipe and skill. The flavour was just right with good balance of herbs and spices. Texture was delicate. It was served with in-house made pappadelle cooked to al dente. This was my first dish here and the best dish as well. Next was an American classic style of sandwich: Philadelphia Steak and Cheese (8/10). Just by looking what had been placed on the table, I drooled unconsciously already. Tender slices of steak and cheese complemented so well with generous vegetable and peppers. It was the peppers that brought the picture together nicely. The final magic was the bread which was soft but crisp on the outside. Just the first two dishes, good impression has started building up.

Moving on to steak, there were German Simmental Tenderloin 230g (7/10) and Japanese Kamichiku Striploin A4 150g (8/10) for the night: two kinds of beef from two different cuts and from two continents. Both were tender and yielded distinctive flavour and aroma. The German tenderloin was less fatty and less juicy (of course) but exposed more of natural flavour and texture of meat. On the other hand, Kamichiku striploin burst out the juicy fatty character more and indeed was more tender on the touch. Personally, I enjoy the German tenderloin more due to the bite-able texture. Only if the cut was thicker, meaning heavier weight, it would be such a perfect piece.

On the downside, steak at The Capital does not come with any kind of sauce at all. You will have to order if you would like one. For us, we did try Mushroom Cream Sauce (THB150) which was nice, aromatic, and creamy. But honestly, this was too expensive for such a small portion of sauce (approx. 2 portions of glass shots). I believe this should not be charged to customer at all. It is just sauce and sauce should usually compliment along side steak, unless the restaurant sees that their steak does not need any kind of sauce at all to be enjoyed. From my point of view, a touch of Dijon mustard does its job wonderfully. By the way, salt also played a crucial role for steak and there are 3 types of sea salt here to be chosen from: white flake from UK, merlot infused himalayan, and spices infused himalayan.

Last but not least, a side dish was also ordered to complete the act: Dauphinoise Potatoes (8/10) or simply called potatoes gratin. It was so creamy, so cheese, and so flavourful. Well, all in all The Capital is definitely an excellent place for dining. It is not cheap but it sure will satisfy your appetite.

Ristorante Puny @ Portofino, Italy

Portofino, at Liguria region of Italy, is indeed a dream destination for many travellers. It sure is a busy little village and harbour but can be beautiful and breathtaking during nice weather days. During our trip, we drove to Portofino from Piedmont just to stop by this famous destination. It was only a few hours that we were there but surely enough to get the feel of this place.

During lunch hour, we popped by one of the restaurant that seems to be well-known in the cyber world: Ristorante Puny. We did some research before going and this little does seem to get praised a lot and we did not hesitate to give a try. For location wise, it is sure a guarantee for fantastic spot and view. I believe it would be really romantic for a date night out dinner. Seats are organised at store front to face the harbour. We were lucky to be seated right at the front row as we were the very first to arrive. It was not really a bright weather day but nice enough to dine there. Staffs were rather cold as we felt. Nevertheless, the old man owner did take thing very actively, advising from the back row himself.

For the dish, we had Pappardelle Portofino (8/10) and Pesce al Sale (7/10). Pappardelle Portofino was definitely a very nice tomato based pasta. A really simple looking dish but tasted wonderfully. The creamy texture and rich flavour sauce went fabulously with large pappardelle. Next was Pesce al Sale which is basically baked sea bass with salt. Nothing much fancy here but fresh sea bass baked with salt served with olive oil. Satisfaction was there for me. Fresh fish baked just right with tender texture. The rest was just salty taste on the palate and aroma of olive oil. I do like it.

Well, Ristorante Puny is not a cheap place at all but a good experience al fresco, especially when visiting with your love one. The view is remarkable. Not cheap but I would still say recommendation to anyone who is going to visit Portofino.

Papa's Kitchen @ Soi Phattanakarn 30, Bangkok - ปาป้า คิทเช่น @ ซอยพัฒนาการ 30 กรุงเทพฯ

Cuisine: burger / family style food
Price: THB400 per person without alcohol (what we paid for)
Visited: 30 November 2014

Atmosphere: 5/10
Value for money: 6/10

If you like those delicious fatty easy food like burger, Papa's Kitchen may be an answer for you if you live nearby Phattanakarn Road. Papa's Kitchen is just a small venue, only a block of commercial building, in Soi Phattanakarn 30 with perhaps around 15 tables: hardly any parking lots and not even near BTS / MRT.  But the good thing is burgers here are really yummy. Other selection in the menu are as well pleasant. It is a kind of place where you can grab a good chillax meal with family and friends: i.e. a kind of place for the local. If you do not live in Phattanakarn area, Papa's Kitchen might be a little too far. There are many other places with good burgers out there in town. However, it is sure a good little place for the local.

For us, we were there during an unexpected Sunday lunch and the place was surprisingly packed. This was a good sign for us definitely and it did not disappoint us at all. We were all happy with dishes here. At least, we know for sure that we will be coming back here from time to time.

small place but big taste venue

Burgers are just burgers and no need for me to go into detail of each one, right? It's all about filling you like. What we had for meal were: B.C.M. Burger (8/10), Mushroom Swiss Burger (8/10), and Papa's Club Sandwich (7/10). B.C.M. is simply bacon, cheese, and mushroom. I promise this one is delicious. Mushroom Swiss is too another one to go for if you are a fan of mushroom. Papa's Club Sandwich may be an odd one. It looks like burger (using burger bun instead of toast) but filled with grilled chicken, bacon, ham, fried egg, cheese, and vegetable. This one is nice too but just personally prefer beef when it comes to this kind of thing. Each one also came with a side dish of your choice, such as fries, coleslaw, and salad.

In term of pricing, burgers here are not cheap, pricing similar to those restaurants in Thonglor or some hotels, but it guarantees with satisfaction. All beef burgers are made of Australian beef (150 grams at it states). One thing I like about this Papa's Kitchen is the price is VAT inclusive and no add-on service charge. Hence, you clearly know your expense and extra tip for service can be given on judgement instead of compulsory even service is intolerable. Not many restaurants in Bangkok nowadays does this kind of thing like in the past.

Mushroom Swiss Burger (THB270)

Papa's Club Sandwich (THB250)

Moving on to non-burger dishes. Onion Ring Tower (6/10) would surely be everyone favourite dish. Quite pretty nicely done here with crispiness. Mama's Wild Mushroom (6/10) is a no wow factor choice but so much joy when having it. Simple mushroom and cream based pasta coming in a large plate; all kids will love this one (I guess). Next was Fish and Chips (5/10). A British dish amongst American menu but it was not bad at all though it was not cod nor haddock, if I was not mistaken (fingers crossed).

Having burgers without milkshake, something is surely not completed. Hence, milkshakes were also our order. We had Banoffee Shake and Vanilla Shake (6/10) and Root Beer Float (A&W root beer). They both were nice but I would prefer a creamier type. Drink beverage at Papa's Kitchen mostly comes at the price around THB100+. Not really cheap though but enjoyable.

Simply said, I personally like this place and would be back. Really enjoy the yummy tender juicy burger here.

La Cucina della Marianna @ Griante, Como, Italy

Cuisine: Italian
Price: EUR30 per person (what we paid for)
Visited: 4 October 2014

Atmosphere: 6/10

Visiting Lake Como can be a really good vacation with those beautiful view and landscape. However, it can be tedious sometimes to find proper non-tourist type restaurants. Here is one for you. La Cucina della Marianna, which is a part of Alberghetto della Marianna, is a local joint in Griante with good local food and friendliness. The alberghetto part is a kind of decent place to stay in which Paola, the owner, manages almost everything. On the other hand, the restaurant part is run by Chef Ty who is Paola's husband. It sounds more interesting when it comes to family run kind of place, right? By the way, both Paola and Ty are so lovely, friendly, funny, and helpful.

The place is not big but cosy and comfortable. There are probably around 10 tables only and during the night of our visit there were around 4 or 5 tables. Ty only serves 1 set of dish per day, meaning a choice of starter, first course, second course, and dessert per day. So you won't stand a chance to repeat the dish you may have on a previous day of the same week. Basically, there is no need to choose what to try and let Ty improvises for you. All you need to think is how full you would like to be.

As mentioned, there is only one set of menu a day. However, you do not have to eat the all 4 courses. For us, we went for medium menu (EUR35) which comprised of first course and second course. Pricing seems high but if you are a guest of the alberghetto, you do get 25% off. As for the wine, there are a selection of decent list as well as wine by glass (all Italian of course). You may just tell Ty your preference and he can make suggestion. For me, Ty recommended La Brugherata Rosso di Alberico Merlot 2013 (88/100) which is a local wine in the Lombardy region. It has fruity character of Merlot but rather lively acidity and medium body. Good table wine to enjoy young.

For the night of our meal, the first course was Chestnut Spatzli (7/10). This egg based soft pasta was so simple, so local, but so delicious. There are always some kinds of magic in good pasta dishes and this one was no exception. The soft and tender texture of pasta blended so well with natural sweetness of chestnut. With an addition of good grated cheese on top, this was delicious. For the second course, it was Mushrooms Pork Cheek (7/10). Ok, it was tender, it was juicy, and it was yummy. We liked the strong mushroom flavour of the sauce. The mash alongside was smooth and nice too. We were not disappointed at all.

Well, let me tell you one thing. If you are thinking to visit Lake Como during the next few years and would happen to be in Griante area, do not miss this place. There is a high chance that both Paola and Ty might retire in the next few years after their decades of services. Why not at all stay Alberghetto della Marianna and have a meal there if you really have a chance. Thank god we found this place.

Ristorante Silvio @ Bellagio, Como, Italy

Cuisine: Italian
Price: EUR33 per person (what we paid for)

Food: 7/10
Atmosphere: 8/10
Value for money: 8/10
Services: 6/10

Bellagio is without doubt a very beautiful small town in the Province of Como. Being so famous does of course come with difficulty to spot non-tourist kind of restaurants. We were no exception and were in the search of good restaurant. At the time of our visit, I have to say we were lucky enough to discover this fabulous restaurant which is just a few kilometres from the centre of Bellagio. It is Ristorante Silvio which is a part of hotel Albergo Silvio.

Ristorante Silvio is located right by Lake Como on the West side of Bellagio and facing Tremezzo. The dining room is spacious with around 20 tables. There are also outdoor seats for al fresco dining on a good weather day too. In fact, windows in the dining can be lifted down which is splendid. At the time of our arrival, there were only a few tables around but the place was packed with local within 30 minutes. At this point, we were at least sure that we had been in the right restaurant.

Ristorante Silvio is well-known for its fish dish and local cuisine. It is believed that fish are caught fresh daily here. Scanning through the menu, it is parted into 4 main sections as usual: starter, first course, second course, and dessert. Unsurprisingly, most of dishes are fish menu. Pricing was the surprise, it is kept in line with most of local restaurants and we would say that it is a good value accounting its location and quality. For wine list, it is ranged from table wine to the high end side. The list is not extensive but at its modest choice. for me, Corvo Bianco 2013 from Sicily did its job pretty nicely with fish dishes. The fruity aroma character with crispiness did the job rather well. This is a decent table wine definitely.

For us, the first two dishes were Homemade Stuffed Ravioli with Savetta Fish and Butter (8/10) and Homemade Tagliolini with Fresh Lake Fish Ragout (8/10). The ravioli was excellent. Texture was great. I just love the word al dente really. It is a word that comes with deliciousness. The filling was smooth fish mousse. Cooked with butter, herbs, and topped with sage. Delicacy in local style, it is. For tagliolini with fish ragout, this was somewhat strange. I normally would see ragout of lamb or beef. But it was fish in such a case. Just by looking, you would not believe it was fish. Having tasted, I still hardly think it was fish. Hardly any trace of fishy scent. This is a fabulous ragout dish in Silvio style. A must try dish, I would say.

Homemade Stuffed Ravioli with Savetta Fish and Butter (EUR9)

Homemade Tagliolini with Fresh Lake Fish Ragout (EUR8.5)

For the main courses, the first one was Fried Pike with Onion Cream (6/10). An enjoyable fish dish with a little firm texture of pike pairing with savoury onion cream and lemon. I would not say this dish is as wow as those aforementioned pastas but still a good one to enjoy. The second one was Boneless Grilled Lavarello (7/10). Lavarello is a local lake fish. The texture was low in fattiness. Firm but not hard. Somewhat thin fillet. This was fresh and delicious. Simple grilled fish with lemon was sure enough and satisfy. For both dishes, there were potatoes and zucchini along side to accompany.

Well, we have to say that we really this restaurant. Nice view. Good food. Good wine. Not overly priced. What else should I demand more???????
