La Tour D'Argent (Special Visit) @ Le Normandie, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Bangkok

Cuisine: French
Price: THB5,000 per person without alcohol (what I paid for)
Visited: 9 July 2011
Food: 8/10
Atmosphere: 9/10
Value for money: 5/10
Services: 10/10

Le Normandie @ Mandarin Oriental Hotel Bangkok is without doubt one of the finest French haute cuisine in Thailand. Perhaps I do not have to mention about the perfection of Le Normandie: the grand and elegant decoration, the finest choices of menu, the great wine list, and most of all the unrivalled services. During the first week of July 2011, La Tour D'Argent, the famous restaurant of Paris that has been in operation for more than 400 years, did give Le Normandie a special visit. Of course, the well-known Duck Press was also in the menu for residence of Bangkok to try without flying all the way to Paris. We were lucky this time to be able to book a place for lunch to try the legendary duck. La Tour D'Argent has claimed to raise ducks at its own farm. Each diner who orders the duck would receive a postcard with serial number. At this occasion, Andre Terrail, the owner of the restaurant, has flew all the way himself to greet guesses.

Ranges of home-made bread here are spectacular. All of which were really tasty and the choice of butter here was selected with the well-known Danish brand "Lurpak". Though it was not a home-made butter but the good enough to satisfy us though.

The first dish of the meal was Beef Terrine with Charroux Mustard. Though we found that it was tender and sweetness from terrine with a hint of sour scent that combine everything nicely, we still think that this dish was nice at the ordinary level (7/10).

Next was Pike Dumpling "Andre Terrail". This dish was surely an outstanding one. Supremely soft which combined just perfectly with foamy and creamy gratin and mushroom. Some people may feel that this dish gives the feeling of fish ball though (9/10).

This was followed by Roasted Cod with Olives and Tomatoes. This one was well cooked to give the perfect tenderness of fillet. It had rather light taste with tomato as the main scent. We felt that this dish tasted a bit like Ratatouille, hence, this gave a rather traditional expression (8/10).

Shoulder Confit of Lozere Lamb with Agria Mille-Feuille was indeed a delightful dish. The supreme tenderness of lamb with scent of herbs. The gravy was enjoyable but we felt that it was a bit too salty, otherwise a perfection (8/10).

Here comes the legendary duck: Duckling Tour d'Argent, Souffleed Poatatoes. The special thing about this was the gravy sauce that was made by pressing parts of duck including bone and blood. Perhaps we did expect it too much, we felt that this dish was not that special. The duck was not that tender but firm and smooth (7/10).
The other one was Slow Cooked Duck Leg with Bearnaise Sauce, Salad with Truffle Oil. We prefer this one though. The meat was really tender while the skin was crisp. Another traditional dish that was well prepared (8/10).

The dessert was Red Fruits in an Aromatic Hibiscus Juice and Cream Cheese Sorbet. This one was well picked by the chef. After heavy meal you would not want another heavy dessert, right? This one was light and refreshing with combination of sweetness and sour of berries. The sorbet was smooth and pleasant. We did want more of this though (8/10).

Petit Fours with a cup of Latte after the meal was rather great and cheerful.

This restaurant is surely a supreme quality restaurant, however, these fine qualities do come at cost though. Overall we did enjoy the foods prepared by La Tour D'Argent and the super friendly services of Le Normandie. Nevertheless, pricing was rather excessive for a meal of this quality from our opinion. But for an experience may be acceptable.

Restaurant Steirereck im Stadtpark @ Vienna, Austria

Cuisine: Austrian
Price: EUR140 per person without alcohol (what I paid for)
Visited: 11 April 2011
Food: 9/10
Atmosphere: 8/10
Value for money: 9/10
Services: 7/10

During our visit to Vienna, we had a chance to visit Restaurant Steirereck im Stadtpark, which is of course by its name situated in the heart of central park of Vienna. I could heartedly say that this restaurant has the most beautiful location in the city: elegant yet relaxation. This place offers innovative Austrian menu created by Chef Heinz Reitbauer. To us, we would certainly not be surprised if this place will be awarded with 3 Michelin Stars.

Decoration is warm and grand. The service is also great. Staffs were helpful at the time we visited though we had some difficulty in communication as we do not speak German and they speak broken English. Nevertheless, each course we had there would be a menu card explaining clearly what this dish is and how it is cooked in brief. What we love about this place is the way they manage to cook something, which we cannot imagine it could taste so lovely, perfectly. Innovation, presentation, and selection of ingredients are wonderful here. We would definitely return to this place if we have another chance to visit Vienna.

Surprisingly, ranges of bread here are not like others I have tried. There are whole bunches of bread you can choose from, just like a mini boulangerie. All of which were very nice and cream garlic butter was really delightful.

Amuse Bouche here was rather creative. Unfortunately that we only had a chance to jog down 1 of 4 complimentary from the kitchen. It was Lamb Tongue with Green Almond, Lemon and Garlic which was really tender and tasteful.

The very first courses for us tonight were Char with Beeswax, Yellow Carrot, Pollen and Sour Cream and Meadow Herbs with Wild Garlic Shoots and Free Range Chicken. Char was really splendid. Well marinated piece of tendered fish that went perfectly well with sour cream. This is was delightfully wow (9/10). For meadow herbs, this dish was rather below Steirereck's standard from our perspective. It was too light in taste. It might be nice to have but normal (6/10).

White Roots with Gillardeau Oysters, Chicory and Spoonwort might seem dull at first bite but it became better and better during next bites. Fresh and crisp on the outside (7/10).
The other dish was Wild Broccoli with Smoked Curd Cheese, Pecan Nuts, Artichoke and Cress Seeds which was another refreshing dish. Crispiness and cracked pecan nuts went great with smoked curd cheese (8/10).

The first of third dish was Danube Salmon with Rice and Peas, Beta Sweet Carrot and Green Apple. This dish was surely great: soft touch with little sweetness. Rice was crunchy like "Kao Mao" of Thai dish (pounded unripe rice) (8/10).
Next was Charcoal Grilled Tubers with Tumeric Caviar and Shoots. Vegetables based dish that came with sour and sweet scent. Tangy and enjoyable with creation (8/10).

Next in line was another amazing vegetarian dish: Emmer with King Trumpet Mushrooms, Lovage Milk and Celeriac. This was really smooth and mild nutty flavour. Cannot believe that vegetarian dish could be this great: just wanna have more (10/10).
Mangalitza Pork with Chervil Root, Ginger and Cress was a piece of art. It was not just so beautiful but a taste of heaven, especially chervil root cream. Best part of this dish was not the super tender piece of port but the great combination of various type of ingredient to give pleasant taste (10/10).

For our main courses, Morels with Wild Chervil, White Radish, Mocha and Jerusalem Artichoke was beautifully decorated, yet delicious. This dish was another beyond imagination: delightful and plenty of creativity (9/10).
Roast Pigeon with Parsley, Amaranth, Millet and Sesame was heavenly tender served in sauce with sweet scent. I just fell in love with this dish, especially steamed parsley root filled with parsley purée that was undoubtedly delicious (10/10).

Desserts here at Steirereck were also unrivalled to none. Bolero Carrot with Oats, Hemp and Tarragon had no green smell presented. Both carrot cake and carrot mousse were soft while oat ice-cream was smooth and crunchy with just right sweetness level (9/10).
Jaina Chocolate with Yoghurt, Finger Limes, Cucumber and Verbena was one of the best white chocolate I have ever had. Hint of yoghurt mixed with cucumber and lemon to finish the touch was excellent (10/10).

Additional to the tasting menu, Steirereck also offers tea from the trolley that can be mixed with fresh herbs. I was sure confused what to have due to vast varieties. This was really wonderful with Petit Fours of chocolate and dry slice of citrus fruits.

99 Rest Backyard Cafe @ Rama 9 Road, Bangkok

Cuisine: International
Price: THB800 per person (what I paid for)
Visited: 26 June 2011
Food: 5/10
Atmosphere: 8/10
Value for money: 5/10
Services: 6/10

We recently came across this lovely restaurant called "99 Rest Backyard Cafe" and decided to try out right away. Just like its name, it is situated within a relaxing atmosphere which is surrounded by garden. Ok...foods and choices of drink are just like other bistro & brasserie style such as Wine I Love You or Minibar Royale. However, atmosphere is the highlight here: lovely decoration in contemporary style with a touch of Thai mood and homely garden. Upon arrival, we were stunned by the beautiful scenery of this place, friendly yet relaxing. This is surely a good place to be enjoy with family. The restaurant is located just a few minutes from Thonglor by car.

Just a little attention on the menu, we think that it is lovely such that there are many different good quotes about food in the menu. Taking a look at them, good quote good meaning they are.

Some Good Quote

Though we did not have a chance to take note down this time, we wish that compensation of photos will give you enough feeling of dishes here. Overall most of items here are on par level (5/10).

We did try quite a number of starter including salads and fried dishes.

Basket of Bread

Crispy Calamari

Onion Rings

Caesar Salad

Rocket Salad & Spicy Italian Sausage

UFC - Unidentified Fried Chicken

A few of pasta and noodle types are also observed. They were up to standard on quality and taste.

For main course dishes, we found that Duck Confit was rather good and was a better choice than others. However, this does not mean the others are not enjoyable though.

99 House Banger & Mash

Tamarind Baby Back Ribs

Australian Sirloin 200 Days Short Grain Fed

Desserts were just ok and perhaps the most typical one like Thai Sundae was the star. The others can be delightful but not outstanding.
