Atmosphere: 7/10

It was a while back, just after 2014 New Year, when we visited The Myth of Mahanaka at Soi Sukhumvit 29 (right at the entrance to the Soi). The Myth of Mahanaka serves kind of contemporary Thai food, meaning not really traditional style nor fusion nor modern but somewhat in between. However the style of the place is more like Arab, from the name to the decoration. What I like about the place is the atmosphere. The place is spacious and rather private with nice music background.

The Myth of Mahanaka is not just a restaurant but also a bar / lounge. There are various types of beverage available for those who just wanna hang out and chit chat. Despite rather good ambient, we were not so impressed with taste of dishes here. At least the pricing is not too excessive for these days. On the service side, we would say it towards negative side, just felt like staffs somehow were ignorant. Never mind that anyway.

the menu

The menu consists of quite a number of dishes to be selected. The very first thing I had noticed was the price of boiled jasmine rice which costed THB50 per portion. That was ridiculously expensive for just a plate of boiled rice in Thailand. Anyway, we did have a few choices of starters to kick off our meal. The price range was not cheap either. The one we rather enjoyed was Yam Som O, otherwise just ok to eat. Below is the list of starters we had.

Yam Som O - ยำส้มโอ
Poh Piah Ped Krob - ปอเปี๊ยะเป็ดกรอบ
Tao Hoo French Fries - เต้าหู้เฟรนช์ฟรายส์
Yam Phak Boong Krob Goong -

Moving on to heavier dishes, we had Satay Ruam - สะเต๊ะรวม which was basically mix of Satay : i.e. pork, chicken, and beef. I promise that any satay on street stalls are ways better than this one. Not to be harsh but I gotta say that it tasted somewhat like it was cooked from those ready-to-cook paste. Then we had Phad Phak Boong Fai Daeng - ผัดผักบุ้งไฟแดง and Phad Phak Ruam - ผัดผักรวม. Did not expect much about fried vegetable. At least, there was nothing horrible.

As for heavier dishes, we in fact appreciated these more. We had Chu Chee Pla Hima - ฉู่ฉี่ปลาหิมะPanaeng Gai Lychee - พะแนงไก่ลิ้นจี่, and Tom Kha Gai - ต้มข่าไก่. The Chu Chee Pla Hima or snow fish in curry sauce was nice. It at least brought us back some liveliness. The Panaeng Gai Lychee (a kind of red curry with chicken) was as well not bad. Just the fact that breast chicken meat was selected for the dish which gave somewhat dry touch on the palate. I believe this might not be a favourite choice for Thai but perhaps tourists.

For desserts, we say they were weird. Understand that The Myth of Mahanaka is trying to be creative. But we feel that sometimes the traditional choice was do much better job.  For examples Rose Apple Tart Tatin - ทาร์ตชมพู่ which was not so weird but somewhat not so balance both flavour and texture and Gluay Buad Chee - กล้วยบวชชี which was surely not Gluay Buad Chee from my sense. It looked more like pancake wrapped with mashed banana served with coconut sauce from my point of view. I personally do not like this dish. Setting aside Khao Niew Mamuang - ข้าวเหนียวมะม่วง which they cannot really go much wrong with one of the most famous dessert in Thailand. Thai Influenced Trio Creme Brulee - ครีมบูเลสามชนิด (ginger, pandanas, and coconut cream) and Kalameur Banoffee Tart - บานอฟฟี่กาละแมร์ทาร์ต surprisingly turned out to be better than expected. The texture of creme brulee might not be so perfect but I rather like the way the 3 flavours were presented distinctively and in a good way. The ginger one was outstanding for me. The Kalameur Banoffee Tart was a good idea to substitute the typical condensed caramel in banoffee with the local alike thing "Kalameur". It showed chewy texture with the unique sweet flavour and scent.

Well, we were not really impressed with the overall picture of The Myth of Mahanaka. To return here is indeed still far from being in the list of things to do. Trying not to be harsh though but this is what we really experienced.

Basil @ Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit, Bangkok

Cuisine: Thai
Price: THB750 per person without alcohol (what we paid for)
Visited: 6 December 2013
Food: 8/10
Atmosphere: 7/10
Value for money: 9/10
Services: 8/10

People always say that Thai restaurant at hotels is always one of the worst, else only made for foreigners. Well, it is a different story at Basil @ Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit. Not only the food is wonderful, services are also at high standard just as its neighbour Rossini's. All staffs are so helpful and friendly. Expectation on good recommendation to your taste can be met. As for atmosphere, the place itself has been established to present a rather modern style of Thai decor. The dimmed light gives a more warming touch (can be a choice for dating too). Anyway, the overall impression is a warm touch. As for myself, I am sure a regular at Basil so I would recommend any of you to give it a go. Unless you are those who thrive for strong and spicy taste, then you may forget about this place. It is more elegant and herbal style.

Upon arrival we were served with amuse bouche which was Miang Kham - เมี่ยงคำ (8/10). In case you are not sure what Miang Kham is, Miang Kham is a northern Thai traditional snack with often shallots, ginger, garlic, lime, roasted coconut, roasted peanut, and palm syrup wrapped with chaphlu (piper sarmentosum). This was wonderful indeed: as good as ones from those famous shops.

Another great point here is the range of boiled rice. There are 3 choices available: jasmine rice, lemongrass scented rice, and brown rice. So I didn't hesitate to go for all options, though personally I am one who falls in love with brown rice. To start off our meal, we had moo thord takrai nga khao - หมูทอดตะไคร้งาข้าว (7/10). This is simply deep-fried marinated pork loin with white sesame and served with crispy lemongrass. I do like the tenderness and juicy flavourful loin. The alongside sauces comprise of 2 kinds which are sweet but balance. It was indeed a good start up for a meal.

Now moving on to seafood dishes (for good health ^_^). All four seafood dishes we had during the night were fabulous.

choo chee pla salmon - ฉู่ฉี่ปลาแซลมอน (7/10): This pan-fried salmon in red curry sauce was not bad at all. Not that spicy but filled with herbal touch. The red curry was mild and the fillet texture was perfectly cooked.

phad poh taek - ผัดโป๊ะแตก (8/10): Often that sauteed seafood with lemongrass and herbs are not my enticing dish. But poh taek at Basil is at an interesting pace. The dish came with seafood range, such as scallop, soft shell crab, prawn, and etc., in spicy sauce but such spiciness was from herbs, not chilli. I was sure enjoy the dish.

mok pla salmon - หมกปลาแซลมอน (6/10): I, at first, believed it was some kind of Hor Mok (steamed curry custard) but I sure was wrong. It was instead steamed salmon with chilli paste and without curry. Well, it may not be one of the best dish but enjoyable.

pla kapong sauce sam rod - ปลากระพงซอส 3 รส (9/10): This is one of my most favourite dish at Basil. The seabass in sweet and sour with chilli sauce was so balance. The sweetness, the saltiness, and the hot and spicy weighted out each other. Nothing over powering. The fillet was fried till crisp but inside texture was preserved with moist and tenderness. This is one that cannot be missed.

For curry/soup dishes, I went for mussaman gae - มัสมั่นแกะ (9/10) and tom kha gai - ต้มข่าไก่ (7/10). For mussaman gae, it is lamb curry with peanut base and the unique beauty of caraway. It is one of my favourite Thai dish of all time. It went amazingly well with boiled rice. To have this dish, it is perfect with rice so you must must must have rice along with it. The flavour was packed with herbs and rich. The texture was thick but smooth. Just the aroma was already irresistible. Highly recommend dish. Tom kha gai, on the other hand, is a famous Thai soup with coconut galangal as the main players. The plus point is the way it was cooked such that the fat was not broken out of coconut milk. Personally, a bit more of galangal and lime would make this a simple perfect dish.

Taling Pling @ Silom, Bangkok

Cuisine: Thai
Price: THB400 per person without alcohol (what I paid for)
Visited: 1 January 2011
Food: 6/10
Atmosphere: 5/10
Value for money: 7/10
Service: 5/10
Overall: 6/10

This original Taling Pling at Silom is a house-converted restaurant which is decorated in a stylish setting with oldie photos enlightening the walls. Taling Pling at Silom is located pretty close to Surasak BTS station which would be convenient for both local and tourists. Car parks are also available. It does not only offer varieties of Thai food, Western-style food and desserts can also be ordered. This restaurant has been famous among foreigners in Thailand and reservation is highly recommended for evening meals.

Taling Pling also gives variety of choices for drinks for its customers as well as a choice of white or brown rice. This time I picked brown rice and Lemongrass Juice for my choice. The lemongrass juice gave the refreshing feeling (8/10).

The first two dishes to arrive were Salted Crab Dip with Crudités (7/10) and Crab Roe Paste Dip with Vegetables (6/10). Salted crab dip with crudités was rather sweet and creamy which was irresistible when eating with vegetables especially winged bean and young ginger. Crab roe paste dip was also not worse than the salted crab dip. When having with crisp fried catfish, it was just amazing. This dip was a little salty but not spicy which could be suitable for those who cannot take hot stuff.

The next dish to arrive was Fried Fish Strips in Batter with Tamarind Sauce (6/10). The fish was crisp, the sauce was sweet and sour and scent of tamarind, fried shallot enhanced the taste more than a touch; a delightful dish indeed.

This was then followed by Stir Fried Sataw (Bitter Bean) with Prawns & Chili (6/10). This Southern style dish, which was spicy, comprised of sweet and tender prawns and bitter beans as main ingredients. This dish can be downturn for those who cannot bear bitter beans, otherwise a must try one.

The last dish for main course was Lotus Stem and Thai Mackerel in Coconut Soup (7/10). Another incredible dish at Taling Pling, lotus stem was just crisp and soft at the same time. While the coconut soup was sweet, salty taste from mackerel also combined well (7/10).

I ended up the meal with Ruby Water Chestnut & Coconut in Coconut Milk (7/10). The coconut milk was sweet, fragrant, and authentic. While ruby water chestnut was crisp, coconut was thick and soft. What an enjoyable dessert.
Homemade Custard Apple Ice-cream (7/10), a Western-style dessert in Thai flavour, was creamy and little chewy with strong scent of custard apple.

Taling Pling is indeed another restaurant for all purpose visit ranging from family and friends gathering to business meal. It has been keeping consistency in quality of food and pricing. Additionally, from time to time, new dishes will also be introduced. I am overall confident that 6/10 is the right determination for this Thai restaurant at Silom.
